The MLB trade deadline is approaching, sparking numerous New York Yankees rumors about potential targets and trade talks. While no deal is imminent, the Yankees seem open to addressing a surprise position before the July 30 deadline.
New York has several needs, especially given recent struggles. Corner infielders and starting pitchers are priorities, but the bullpen also needs help, perhaps more than initially thought.
MLB insider Jon Heyman told Bleacher Report that while the Yankees like All-Star closer Clay Holmes, they might add a closer to challenge or pair with him. Holmes has a 2.77 ERA, a 24.1% K-rate, and a 5.9% walk rate in 39 innings, but has struggled lately with a 7.45 ERA in his last 9.2 innings.
Despite Holmes’ recent issues, the Yankees were already linked to bullpen help, targeting relievers with excellent swing-and-miss stuff. They might pursue unheralded options with promising pitching repertoires. Los Angeles Angels closer Carlos Estevez, with a .172 batting average against him in 33 innings, is an intriguing option.
While All-Star closer Mason Miller has been mentioned in rumors, the Oakland Athletics aren’t expected to move him, and his price is too high for the Yankees. Regardless of Holmes’ status, the Yankees bullpen will likely see changes soon.
