Due to their injury woe, the New York Yankees have decided to acquire an experienced infielder who may be able to start for them on Opening Day.
Multiple reports state that the Yankees are acquiring infielder Jon Berti from the Miami Marlins as part of a three-team transaction. Ben Rortvedt, a reserve catcher, was also sold by the Yankees to the Tampa Bay Rays; in exchange, the Marlins received two prospects.

Yankees: INF Jon Berti
Marlins: OF prospects John Cruz and Shane Sasaki
Rays: C Ben Rortvedt— Alden González (@Alden_Gonzalez) March 27, 2024
Berti might fit the role of a valuable backup infielder on a completely healthy Yankee club. In 2023, he hit.294 while playing five defensive positions for the Marlins. Along with his speed, he is well-known for having stolen 16 bases in 2022 and 41 in 2021.
Due to an injury, DJ LeMahieu, the Yankees’ third baseman, will not be available to play at first base, so Berti may get the start. Expect him to get some time regardless of what happens, especially after LeMahieu returns, because of his versatility in positions.
