With a 4.21 official 40-yard dash time, former Texas Longhorns wide receiver Xavier Worthy holds the record for being the quickest person in NFL Combine history. He had run a 4.25 on his first try of the day, but he set the record on his second run. Furthermore, Worthy thinks he could have run even faster if he had been given a third chance.
“I feel like if I had another run I would’ve gone faster,” Worthy said with a laugh during an appearance on the Rich Eisen show.
Prior to Worthy’s run that broke the record, Ross’s lightning-fast 40-yard sprint mark from 2017 stood at 4.22 seconds. During his combine, Chris Johnson recorded a 4.24, which was the quickest time in a long time, while Marquise Goodwin, a fellow Texas Longhorn, recorded a 4.27.
“I’m tired,” an exacerbated Worthy said after the run. “I watched the combine my whole life as a kid. I saw John Ross run that. I never thought I’d be able to be on this stage and do it.”
Worthy set career highs in almost every statistic this past season, including yards on a career-high 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns. He demonstrated his effectiveness on special teams by returning a punt for a touchdown.
In an attempt to make history, he and Adonai Mitchell hope to be the first Texas receiver selected in the first round since Roy Williams, who was selected at No. 7 in 2004. Thankfully, both receivers will get another opportunity to shine later this spring at the Longhorns pro day. Worthy might even be able to run an even faster 40 time for the scouts present, if he so desires.
