With the 20-year-old “out for a long period,” Sunderland suffered a serious blow.

Jenson Seelt, the center back for Sunderland, has stated that he “will be out for a long period” following his injury to his knee against Southampton.

Seelt, a defender from the Netherlands, joined Sunderland’s roster last summer after leaving PSV Eindhoven.

Throughout his debut season on Wearside, he has been in and out of the team a little. Although he has only participated in 17 games overall, he has started and completed the full 90 minutes in each of the last four championships.

Following the unexpected setback, the 20-year-old verified the news on Instagram, stating that he has hurt his knee and would be out for “a long period of time.”

A hit to all of us

Although the specifics of Seelt’s knee injury are still unknown, Sunderland and Seelt are both devastated by the news.

He would have hoped to finish the season with his starting spot in the starting lineup and have his first true run of reliable starts with the Black Cats, having started the previous four Championship games. That would have been fantastic for his development as a promising player with little senior experience.

It also deprives Mike Dodds of a center-back and right-back option. Aji Alese has only played in two league games this season due to his own injury struggles, so the only other choices at the center of defense will be Dan Ballard and Luke O’Nien.

It appears like Sunderland will have to contend with shortages at the back again, as they have in the past. But for the time being, as Seelt verified the blow, fans will be anxiously awaiting word on the exact extent of his injuries.
