Wigan Warriors boss Matt Peet has urged the revival of the ‘Lancashire v Yorkshire’ State of Origin-style games to address the issues facing representative rugby league in the Northern Hemisphere. This call comes after the disappointing turnout and broadcast situation of the recent England vs. France match, which saw only 4,500 spectators and was overshadowed by a UEFA EURO 2024 game.
Peet, reflecting on the match and its fallout, emphasized the need for players to compete in high-profile, well-attended games. He believes that reviving the Lancashire v Yorkshire fixtures could serve as a stepping stone for players aspiring to the England team, involve more coaches, and attract larger audiences.
Acknowledging the current commitment to games against France, Peet suggested that the domestic Origin-style games could provide better support and development for players and staff. He proposed incorporating games at various levels, including under-21s, 18s, 16s, and women’s teams, to enhance the overall representative structure.
Peet’s sentiments are shared by his club, and he highlights the importance of collaboration between club owners, CEOs, and the Rugby Football League (RFL) to improve the state of international rugby league. He called for a united effort to elevate the sport to the best stage possible.
