David Brooks, on loan from Saints, was substituted due to illness after coming on as a substitute during Wales’ loss to Poland in the Euro 2024 qualification final, decided by penalties.
Brooks made his entrance onto the field with just six minutes remaining in regular time, but was substituted during the second half of extra time, with Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town stepping in to replace him.
Reflecting on the decision post-match, Page acknowledged the risk involved in fielding the Southampton forward, yet deemed it a gamble worth pursuing. He revealed that Brooks had been battling illness since Thursday and had not participated in any training sessions, making his inclusion a risky endeavor.
Page explained, “Someone of Brooksy’s quality, you want to get them on the pitch. We realised straight away that he didn’t have a run in him.” Acknowledging Brooks’ own admission of his condition, Page conceded the challenge they faced. With victory in sight, the decision to bring on Broadhead was made to ensure they had the necessary stamina to see the game through to the end.
Despite his abbreviated appearance, Brooks had recently proven his value to the team, notably scoring the opening goal in Cymru’s 4-1 playoff semi-final victory over Finland, and also assisting Brennan Johnson.
Having emerged as a pivotal player for Southampton since his loan move from AFC Bournemouth in January, Brooks had made significant contributions, with 10 goal involvements in his last 10 matches leading up to his brief stint at the Cardiff City Stadium.
An update on Brooks’ fitness is anticipated from Russell Martin ahead of their match against Middlesbrough on Good Friday.
