Why Southampton can still triumph in the Premier League relegation fight

Southampton missed a big opportunity to secure their first league win before facing Manchester City, leaving them 19th in the Premier League, just ahead of Wolves on goal difference. The Saints’ quest to avoid relegation remains uncertain, but they still have a chance to survive this season’s battle.

Currently, four teams, including Southampton, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, and Wolves, have yet to secure a win after eight matches. Ipswich are the only team outside the relegation zone, thanks to their four consecutive draws.

Ipswich recently suffered back-to-back defeats, while Crystal Palace have endured three narrow losses, scoring just once in those games. Wolves, despite being a decent attacking team, have conceded the most goals in the league. Southampton, however, are showing signs of improvement with each match, and could secure their first win sooner than the others.

If Southampton can pick up key victories before the season’s halfway point, Russell Martin’s side may climb the table and avoid the drop. But to do so, they must address their defensive weaknesses and build on their attacking momentum. After their tough clash with Manchester City, crucial fixtures against Wolves and Everton will be key to their survival hopes.
