Russell Martin has brought a large squad to Spain for Southampton’s pre-season preparations.
After observing his Southampton players in a 7-1 friendly win over Eastleigh, Russell Martin has taken the squad to Spain for a week-long training camp.
In Spain, Southampton will enjoy warm weather training and face two French teams: Bordeaux on Wednesday and Montpellier on Saturday.
Several youth players and seven summer signings have joined the trip. However, first-team players Ross Stewart and Armel Bella-Kotchap stayed behind, and Martin has explained why.
Ross Stewart and Armel Bella-Kotchap Absent from Southampton Squad
Fans noticed the absence of Stewart and Bella-Kotchap from Southampton’s social media posts since arriving in Spain. Neither played against Eastleigh, and Martin has clarified their status.
Martin told the Daily Echo that Bella-Kotchap picked up a minor injury in training last week. He explained, “We have excellent rehab facilities at Staplewood, unlike here. Armel will miss four or five days of training, back by Thursday. But with a game on Wednesday and recovery on Thursday, it would be pointless for him to come here for just one day of training.”
Regarding Stewart, Martin said, “He’s had two good weeks but felt tired. Traveling and adjusting to a new environment isn’t ideal. We need to care for him long-term. Ross wanted to be here but understands the reason for staying. He’s working hard back home to stay fit.”
Martin expects Stewart to play soon, adding, “After another week or two of training, he should be ready for game minutes.”
Stewart’s Season Prospects
Bella-Kotchap’s future is uncertain after a loan at PSV, while Stewart has faced frustration at Southampton. Arriving injured from Sunderland, he debuted in November but injured his hamstring in his second game, sidelining him until season’s end.
Given his long injury history, Martin’s cautious approach is understandable. However, fans are concerned about Stewart’s potential. With limited Championship experience before joining and a long injury layoff, stepping up to Premier League football will be challenging. Southampton fans have seen only four appearances from Stewart, leaving doubts about his capability.
