Both West Ham and Tottenham are keenly interested in securing the signature of Albert Gudmundsson this summer, as reported by TuttoMercatoWeb.
According to TuttoMercatoWeb’s report on March 25th, Albert Gudmundsson, the Icelandic forward, has garnered interest not only from West Ham and Tottenham but also from Serie A powerhouses Juventus and Inter, along with other clubs abroad.
This surge in attention comes following his impressive performance in the Italian top flight with Genoa this season. The 26-year-old has been in fine form, tallying 12 goals in league and cup competitions while also providing four assists for his team, which currently sits comfortably in mid-table. Notably, Gudmundsson showcased his prowess by scoring a hat-trick in Iceland’s 4-1 victory over Israel on Thursday, March 21st.
Despite West Ham’s previous attempt to secure Gudmundsson’s services during the winter transfer window, they were rebuffed by Genoa due to his pivotal role in their campaign, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio on January 10th. Now, it seems that West Ham must contend with formidable competition from their North London counterparts in the pursuit of the talented forward.
Will West Ham compete with Spurs and Italian powerhouses for the forward?
Clubs often find it more agreeable to part ways with their key players between seasons if it allows them the opportunity to adequately replace them.
Therefore, if West Ham had pursued Gudmundsson in January, their chances of securing him would likely have been stronger by the end of the campaign. However, they will need to act decisively when the transfer market reopens, especially if the threat from Spurs is as significant as suggested, given the considerable interest from other clubs.
Whether David Moyes remains at the helm or not, it’s evident that reinforcements are needed in the forward areas this summer. The futures of Danny Ings and Divin Mubama remain uncertain, Michail Antonio almost departed earlier in the year, and there has been no replacement signed for Gianluca Scamacca.
Jarrod Bowen’s significant contributions and Mohammed Kudus’s support have mitigated the lack of firepower up front, especially after the departures of Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma in January without any incoming reinforcements.
Even if West Ham emerges victorious in the race for Gudmundsson, he would only be one of several new recruits needed. It seems that Tim Steidten, the West Ham scout, will have his work cut out for him.
Additionally, in other West Ham news, the club appears to have intensified their interest in an undefeated international defender after closely monitoring him on multiple occasions.
