Virgin Australia Mark of the Year: Capable pair soar to new heights

Jamie Elliott and Bobby Hill, two explosive forwards, have been named finalists for the Virgin Australia AFL Mark of the Year 2024.

Both Jamie Elliott and Bobby Hill delivered jaw-dropping marks in 2024, making strong cases for the Mark of the Year award, but only one can claim the title.

Elliott, at 32, produced a remarkable leap during ANZAC Day against Essendon, launching off Ben McKay’s shoulders in the third quarter to secure a mark 45 meters from Collingwood’s goal. Channel Seven commentator James Brayshaw described it as “an ANZAC Day spectacular.” It wasn’t Elliott’s first big moment, having won the award back in 2013, and many believed he had it in the bag again this year.

However, Bobby Hill raised the stakes in Round 14 against North Melbourne. In the third term, Hill used two North Melbourne players and teammate Billy Frampton as a platform, seemingly gaining a second spring mid-air to pull down an incredible mark. The sheer height and acrobatic nature of his leap put him in direct contention with Elliott for the award.

The 2024 Virgin Australia Mark of the Year winner will receive $50,000 and two million Velocity Points, enough for two return Business Class Reward Seats to over 500 destinations worldwide. Fans and the AFL All-Australian Panel will vote, with the winner to be announced during the 2024 Brownlow Medal on September 23.

Voting is now open, with fans also having a chance to win $5,000 courtesy of Virgin Australia. Collingwood has had three previous winners of the award: Jamie Elliott (2013), Andrew Krakouer (2011), and Chris Tarrant (2003).
