The cornerstone of the San Antonio Spurs franchise, Victor Wembanyama, expressed on Thursday how well he and the team’s management aligned with their long-term goals of winning an NBA title.
“I feel like there’s no internal, there is no fights between us, so it is good,” Wembanyama said. “It’s the right way for the future.”
Wembanyama characterized his connection with the Spurs’ management as great despite the team’s 15-55 record through 70 games, even though it is evident that the team wants to compete at the highest level. He referred to the group as the greatest in the NBA and stated that he had complete faith in them.
“I couldn’t ask for better,” Wembanyama said. “Of course, my job is to be on the court and make baskets, but the fact that we work together, it is the best for both our developments.”
Wembanyama’s cooperation with general manager Brian Wright and the team’s reconstruction plan came up last weekend in Austin, when the 20-year-old Frenchman hinted at his expanding position in the team’s future planning.
Wembanyama stressed the value of open communication when asked how he would support the Spurs’ strategy for improving their roster through trades, drafts, and free agency.
“It’s a lot of communication with the coaches and the front office, of course, to know where we are comfortable with each other in the game and where we’re not comfortable, to know what kind of pieces we would need to add,” Wembanyama said.
“So it is a lot of discussion because, at the end of the day, the GM and the front office know their job, and they can do almost anything with what we got today,” Wembanyama continued. “But it’s a matter of how well they understand us, the players and the coaches, about where we want to go and how we want to develop.”
Wembanyama insists on staying in his lane while remaining receptive to advice, particularly with regard to potential French draft picks, acknowledging his crucial role and leadership in determining the team’s future.
“I’m ready to be involved, to collaborate, to give, and to help in any way I can,” Wembanyama said.
