Jacob Douglas will remain with the Wigan Warriors through the 2025 Super League season according to a one-year contract extension that was just activated.
The 20-year-old player was promoted to the first team at the start of 2023, signing a two-year contract with an option for a third year, which has now been exercised. He recently celebrated his first senior try in a 22-4 victory against Hull FC, marking his home debut at The Brick Community Stadium.
Having played his amateur junior rugby at Waterhead Warriors alongside Zach Eckersley, both players were scouted by Matt Peet at the under-13s level. Douglas advanced through the Warriors’ scholarship and academy system starting in 2019, and made his senior debut earlier this year in a 19-18 win over Warrington Wolves at Halliwell Jones Stadium, just a week before the Challenge Cup Final.
In addition to his appearances for Wigan, Douglas has been loaned out to clubs like Whitehaven, Oldham, Bradford, and Barrow. He was also part of the 2023 Reserves Grand Final-winning team that defeated St Helens 24-0 at Robin Park Arena.
Currently, only three Wigan Warriors players Mike Cooper, Willie Isa, and Ryan Hampshir remain without contracts beyond the 2024 season. Isa, 35, has been sidelined since suffering a severe ankle injury in the Challenge Cup quarter-final against Castleford Tigers, while England prop Cooper, also 35, is still being monitored following a head injury assessment failure last month against Leigh Leopards.
Playmaker Ryan Hampshire, 29, might have played his last game for the club after sustaining a season-ending arm fracture during the Round 21 defeat to Leeds Rhinos.
