The Miami-Dade Police Department has attributed the dismissal of traffic citations against Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill to an “oversight” after the officers involved failed to appear at a scheduled court hearing. The department has stated that the issue will be addressed administratively. Hill had received tickets for careless driving and not wearing a seat belt following a traffic stop outside Hard Rock Stadium on September 8, just before the Dolphins’ season opener.
According to reports, the stop was initiated when Hill was allegedly speeding in his McLaren sports car. The situation escalated when an officer tapped on Hill’s window, prompting a verbal exchange. Hill repeatedly objected to the officer’s actions, rolling his window back up after handing over his license. The interaction intensified, leading the officers to forcibly remove Hill from his vehicle, pin him face-down on the ground, and handcuff him. Although Hill did not resist physically, he did express displeasure, saying, “Don’t tell me what to do.” The officers eventually issued him citations and allowed him to proceed to the stadium after a 30-minute delay.
Body camera footage from the incident shows that Hill complied with the officers’ commands, though tensions were high during the exchange. At one point, Hill mentioned difficulty sitting down due to a knee injury, but an officer still pulled him into a sitting position on the curb.
Following the incident, one officer was placed on administrative duty, and an internal affairs investigation was launched. However, no findings from the investigation have been released to date. Hill later commented on the incident on the social media platform X, posting, “Where all the internet cops now.”
The Miami-Dade Police Department has defended the issuance of the citations, stating that the dismissal due to procedural issues does not negate their validity. Despite this, the officers’ failure to attend the hearing resulted in the citations being dropped, bringing the contentious matter to a temporary close.
