This summer, former Sunderland and Middlesbrough striker Mitchell Curry has secured a new club. Curry, who has also played for Inter Miami, has signed a six-month deal with Blyth Spartans, a non-league side competing in the National League One. His contract with Darlington expired earlier this summer, leading to this new opportunity.
Curry’s journey began as a youth player at Middlesbrough before he made the switch to Sunderland in 2020, following loan spells with Harrogate Town, Gateshead, and Inverness Caledonian Thistle. The striker, born in Houghton le Spring, made his debut for Sunderland during the Covid-19 pandemic when the team was short on players due to the virus. He was brought on as a substitute in a December 2020 match against AFC Wimbledon, replacing Will Grigg and playing a crucial 25 minutes in a game that ended in a 1-1 draw.
In March 2021, Curry moved to Major League Soccer, joining Inter Miami, which was managed by Phil Neville and owned by David Beckham. During his time in Miami, Curry scored eight goals in 23 appearances before moving on to play for Hartford Athletic and later Darlington. Speaking about the signing, Blyth Spartans figure Steve Howard expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Mitch is a signing I have wanted for a long time. He is a proven goal scorer, and with his work rate and overall quality, I am really excited to see him join our team.”
