This week, Wisconsin expanded their roster with the announcement that John Tonje, a transfer from Missouri, has committed to the team. The former Tiger had gone through the portal, committed to New Mexico, and then switched to the Badgers. Before beginning his senior year, the 6’6″ guard played his first four seasons primarily as a reserve for Colorado State. In that particular year, Tonje shot slightly under 39% from three-point range and averaged career-highs of 14.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Due to a foot ailment, he transferred to Missouri, where he only appeared in eight games, four of which he started. He was only able to contribute 2.6 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in his restricted role. Tonje made good use of his redshirt because he only appeared in eight games.
Prior to the Badgers offering the guard, Tonje was scheduled to play for New Mexico the next season. Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard stated, “His five years of experience and production at a high level will be extremely valuable to our program.” With Tonje joining Central Arkansas transfer Camren Hunter and Northern Illinois transfer Xavier Amos, Gard has been all over the transfer portal lately. Wisconsin was had to use the portal due to a slew of departures, which included standout guard A.J. Storr.
