Tottenham Hotspur are scheduled to play Bayern Munich twice within a week following the announcement of an additional friendly match. Earlier today, Tottenham confirmed they will face the Bundesliga champions in South Korea as part of the Coupang Play Series 2024, a set of pre-season games featuring top clubs from Europe and Korea. Heung-min Son, leading Tottenham in his home country for the first time since becoming club captain last summer, will play at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday, August 3rd.
Tottenham had already announced a match against Bayern Munich at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, August 10th, as part of the Malta Cup. This doubleheader could see Tottenham encounter their former star, Harry Kane, twice in one week for the first time since his transfer. Kane, Tottenham’s record scorer, left the club last summer to join Bayern in an £86.4 million deal plus add-ons, after scoring 280 goals in 435 appearances for Spurs.
Additionally, Tottenham will play against the Japanese team Vissel Kobe on Saturday, July 27th, at the Japan National Stadium. Ange Postecoglou’s team concluded their Premier League season with a 3-0 victory at Sheffield United, securing a fifth-place finish and qualification for the Europa League next season. The Spurs squad will also play a post-season match against Newcastle United in Melbourne on Wednesday.
The decision to play Bayern Munich twice in quick succession during pre-season is unusual, leading to speculation that these fixtures might have been part of the negotiations for Kane’s transfer to Bayern last August. The second match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will offer fans a chance to see and appreciate their former favorite player for the first time since his departure.
Kane will also be playing for England in Euro 2024 this summer, and with the tournament concluding on July 14th, he is expected to participate in both friendly matches as part of Bayern’s preparations for the upcoming season. Bayern Munich finished third in the Bundesliga, behind Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart, after a surprising 4-2 defeat to Hoffenheim on Saturday.
