The Patriots will encounter a backup quarterback when they face off against the Titans this Sunday.
The Titans signaled their quarterback choice by promoting Trevor Siemian from the practice squad on Saturday, as reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. This move suggests that Mason Rudolph, the backup quarterback, is set to start for the third consecutive game in place of usual starter Will Levis, who remains sidelined with a shoulder injury. Levis, dealing with an injury to his throwing shoulder, is reportedly “not quite ready” to make his return to the field, according to Rapoport.
New England has spent the week preparing for both quarterbacks, with head coach Jerod Mayo addressing each player’s strengths and weaknesses in a media session on Wednesday. Mayo seemed unconcerned by the challenge, pointing out the combined 7-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio of Siemian and Rudolph. He acknowledged the difficulty of preparing for a team with some uncertainty at quarterback, yet noted that both players have demonstrated the ability to win games in the league.
The Patriots will look to capitalize on the chance to play against a backup quarterback, especially after missing a similar opportunity in their Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. On a positive note, New England will also see the return of rookie quarterback Drake Maye, who cleared concussion protocol and is expected to rejoin the lineup on Saturday.
