Sunderland, which lost 4-2 to Southampton last weekend, will looking to bounce back from six straight losses when they play QPR on Saturday.
Djibril Cisse
Cisse was recruited to Wearside by Roy Keane on loan from Marseille, and the Frenchman didn’t take long to make an impression on the Black Cats, scoring in the team’s 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on his debut. The on-loan striker swiftly won over supporters as the team defeated Newcastle 2-1 in the Tyne-Wear derby, scoring his third goal of the season.
After spending his time on loan at Sunderland, Cisse returned to Marseille with 10 goals in 35 games. When the French striker signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with QPR in January 2012, he made his way back to England. Like he did at Sunderland, Cisse scored on his debut to kick off his time at QPR. After collecting two red cards in his first five games for QPR, Cisse scored six goals in eight games for the R’s but was suspended for seven of those games.
After spending the entire season on loan at Al-Gharafa in Qatar the previous season, Cisse left QPR in June 2013 with the consent of both parties.
Anton Ferdinand
In 2008, Anton Ferdinand, Rio’s younger brother, was signed by Sunderland from West Ham on a four-year contract. Over the course of four seasons, Ferdinand made 95 appearances for the Black Cats and contributed to 25 clean sheets. At the end of his Wearside career, Ferdinand was traded to QPR when manager Steve Bruce lost interest in him.
During his two seasons at Loftus Road, the former England under-21 international made 49 appearances and contributed to 10 clean sheets for the R’s. After QPR was demoted to the Championship, Ferdinand was let go.
Jimmy Dunne
The former Burnley under-21 player, who had a good loan spell with Hearts during the first half of the 2018/2019 season, signed a contract to play on loan for Sunderland in January 2019. In the second half of the season, Dunne made 14 appearances for Sunderland and maintained seven clean sheets. The Black Cats placed fifth in League One, but they were finally defeated by Charlton in the ninetieth minute of the play-off final.
The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international was loaned to Fleetwood after one season and then signed a free transfer from Burnley to QPR in 2021. Dunne has now appeared in over 100 games for the R’s and scored five goals. The central defender is still with Loftus Road; his deal expires in the summer, but if QPR want to accept it, the club can extend it by one more year.
