Theo Walcott voices worries for Southampton ahead of Manchester United showdown.

The Saints face Manchester United in the early kick-off on Saturday, but Russell Martin’s side has yet to secure a point from their first three matches.

Martin is committed to a possession-based style of play, but according to Theo Walcott, the problem lies in having too many inexperienced players in the squad.

This could work in United’s favor as we need a boost after consecutive defeats to Brighton and Liverpool.

Ahead of United’s visit to St. Mary’s Stadium, Walcott expressed concerns about the similarities between the current Southampton team and the one he played for when they were relegated two seasons ago.

“I didn’t have them as one of the clubs going down in pre-season,” Walcott said, as quoted by The Mirror. “They were playing a possession-based style, but they were always going to have less in the Premier League.

“It doesn’t matter how many players come in the door; you need to ensure you’re not disrupting the group. I’m seeing a lot of similarities with the year we were relegated.

“There are a lot of young players lacking experience. There’s a pattern they need to break out of. It’s always tough for these clubs, but I believe it will click eventually.

“The squad may not quite be suited for the Premier League yet. Experience will help in time. But do you adjust your style to get results, or continue playing the way you want as a manager?

“I admire how he sticks to his principles—like Ange [Postecoglou] at Tottenham—but he will adapt eventually. Russell Martin hasn’t managed in the Premier League; it’s a whole different experience.

“If they do go down, it will be a learning experience for Russell Martin to help them come back up.

“There has to be a balance. It’s tough for any promoted team with the financial strength and structure of other clubs now. I’m worried about their start, but it’s still early.

“Christmas is when you really assess. When we got relegated, we were okay until the new year when things declined. The constant changes in managers and players never helped as we were always adapting. They have a structure; I think it will click eventually. Hopefully.”

United cannot afford to drop points against Southampton this weekend. If we want to elevate our standards in the league, every game is a must-win.

Walcott already has concerns about his former club Southampton in the Premier League.
