After Charlton Athletic’s victory at The Valley on Saturday interrupted Birmingham City’s winning streak in League One, the team may be looking ahead to February.
Nathan Jones, the manager of Charlton Athletic, changed his team’s strategy for their match against Birmingham City, going with an intense man-to-man press and a “box” midfield. Charlton’s tactic proved effective as they handed Birmingham their first league loss of the year. Left-back Alex Cochrane of Birmingham recognised that Charlton’s press presented a challenge, saying that the hosts put pressure on Birmingham early on, making it difficult for Birmingham to adjust. Cochrane acknowledged that despite their best attempts, Charlton’s aggressive style of play presented issues all along the game. The remarks made by former Charlton loanee Krystian Bielik, who implied Birmingham was “too good” for League One, also served as fuel for Charlton’s desire. These comments served as further motivation for Charlton as he won.
When Charlton comes to St Andrew’s on February 15, 2025, Birmingham will be out for retribution. Given how frustrating the game was, the Blues will probably try to exact revenge for this loss. Birmingham will be hoping for a better result in the rematch with fresh additions to their roster including Alfie May and Jay Stansfield. Birmingham, in the meantime, shown their ability to recuperate and look forward to the next league challenge by winning the EFL Trophy 4-0 against Shrewsbury Town.
