Ryan Garcia Star Keeps Shining: Weekend Afterthoughts

In the angle leading up to the Davis-Garcia match, the buildup and nature of the match was compared to Larry Holmes-Gerry Cooney. It played out like that fight when the matinee idol hopeful revealed she wasn’t really ready for prime time. After Holmes-Cooney, Cooney remained a star, continuing on the pay-per-view with Michael Spinks and George Foreman. Although he lost, those fights helped set the table for Tyson-Spinks and Holyfield-Foreman. In the end, Garcia was too good and too big for Duarte.

Romero:  The  Ryan  Garcia  fight  would  be  one  of  the  biggest  pay-per- view  fights  of  the  year  if  it  were to  happen.

However, Romero was glad that Garcia called him after the eighth-round knockout of Oscar Duarte at the Toyota Center in Houston. The WBA featherweight champion, who is recovering from an undisclosed injury, would welcome a rematch with Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) that he has long wanted in what Romero believes is one of the most marketable pay-per-view bouts in boxing.

Ryan Garcia: I entered the ring for the fight against Gervonta Davis with a rib injury, but I wasn’t going to pull out

“I had  everything  stacked  against  me—I had  to  cut  the  weight  on  top  of  [the  rib  injury],”  Garcia  remarked. However,  I made  this  not  about  me,  so  it  wasn’t. I  turned  it  into  a  sport. I  have  always  had  a  deep  affection  for  the  sport,  but  I  know that  some  people  will  say   negative  things  about  it. I  too  got  tired  of  the  sport.
