Caolan Lavery, a former striker for Sheffield Wednesday, has announced his retirement from football at the age of 31. Lavery joined the Owls’ academy in 2012 and first experienced regular first-team action during the 2013/14 season, scoring four goals in 18 Championship games. Despite spending loan periods at several clubs, he struggled to firmly establish himself at Hillsborough. In 2016, he made a notable move to Sheffield United after declining a new contract with Wednesday. Recently, following medical advice due to a knee injury sustained in February 2023, Lavery decided to retire. He expressed gratitude on social media, acknowledging the support he received throughout his career. Lavery made 39 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, scoring six goals, including a memorable brace in a 6-0 victory over Leeds United in 2014.
Former Rangers and Hearts captain Lee Wallace has made a surprising return to Tynecastle, accepting a new coaching role within the club’s academy set-up, 13 years after leaving as a player. Wallace, a Hearts academy graduate who made his senior debut for the club in 2004 and played 193 matches in maroon, now returns as the assistant coach for Hearts’ under-18 team. His career included significant stints at Rangers and Queens Park Rangers, with notable achievements such as captaining Rangers from 2015 to 2018. Despite a controversial end to his time at Rangers, Wallace’s passion for coaching has been evident, leading to his new role at Hearts where he aims to develop young talent and make a positive impact on the academy.
Former Sunderland manager Lee Johnson has been reflecting on his tenure at the Stadium of Light and expressed a strong desire to return to management. Johnson, who was dismissed by Fleetwood Town last December and later managed Hibernian in Scotland, shared his thoughts with the Daily Mail. He emphasized his eagerness to re-enter management, asserting his confidence in his abilities and the impact he can make. Johnson highlighted the competitive nature of football and hoped that his overall decade-long career would be considered rather than his recent challenges.
Reflecting on his time at Sunderland, Johnson expressed no regrets and spoke fondly of the club, its fans, and its facilities. He acknowledged his disappointment at not being able to see through the promotion but was pleased with the club’s success under Alex Neil’s leadership. Johnson cherished his experience at Sunderland, praising the club’s deep-rooted identity and the passion of everyone involved. Despite exploring various opportunities within football, Johnson’s passion for coaching remains undiminished. He described coaching as a driving force in his life, relishing the camaraderie, the excitement of wins, and the unique thrill of building something special.
A move to the Stadium of Light for Chris Willock would greatly benefit both Sunderland and the player. While Sunderland’s current squad shows significant promise, it lacks the essential Championship experience needed for a team aiming to challenge for the play-offs next season. Willock’s versatility is a major asset; he can play on the wing, as an attacking midfielder, or even as a striker. This flexibility would provide the new manager with valuable options for the lineup. At 26, Willock is entering the prime of his career, and a move to Sunderland could be pivotal for his development. Although signing with Norwich might offer a stronger immediate promotion prospect, Sunderland would likely offer him more playing time, allowing him to shine at the Stadium of Light.
