Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin is pushing through a minor injury in order to stay on the field, following an injury-laden season last year. Cirkin, who suffered several serious setbacks in the previous campaign and made only eight league appearances, is determined not to let minor issues keep him sidelined. Fans may have noticed the left-back sporting a protective bandage on his right hand during Sunderland’s recent 2-2 draw against Coventry City. Despite the discomfort, Cirkin delivered an impressive performance, even scoring a solo goal to bring Sunderland up to two goals before Coventry managed to equalize.

Reflecting on the injury, Cirkin mentioned that while he isn’t at 100%, he’s working with the physio team to manage his condition and stay as close to peak fitness as possible. “There are always little things going on, but as a footballer, you’re never going to be 100% going into a game,” he said. His goal is to find solutions that allow him to play consistently, as he’s been a fixture in the lineup for all 15 of Sunderland’s Championship games so far this season under new head coach Régis Le Bris.

Following the draw against Coventry, Cirkin shared insights on Sunderland’s overall performance and the tactical shifts that impacted the game. He noted that the team excelled in the first half by effectively finding spare players in space, an element they work on diligently each week. However, as the match progressed, the dynamics shifted, and an unfortunate goal allowed Coventry to equalize. Cirkin acknowledged the challenge but credited Coventry’s setup for creating different opportunities, highlighting that every team Sunderland faces presents a unique test.

Despite the frustration of surrendering a two-goal lead, Sunderland remains unbeaten in their last eight matches, though they have been held to draws in their last three games, including matchups with Queens Park Rangers and Preston North End. The Black Cats continue to fight for every point as they look to build momentum and stay competitive in the Championship.
