Graeme Murty, Sunderland’s under-21 lead coach, recently addressed rumors linking him to the vacant managerial role at Hartlepool United. Reports had suggested that the former Rangers boss and Reading player was interested in stepping into the position after Darren Sarll’s departure. However, Murty dismissed the speculation, affirming his focus on his current role at Sunderland. Speaking to *The Echo*, he explained, “It’s not something I concern myself with. I just really want to do a very good job.”
Murty elaborated on his passion for Sunderland, highlighting the club’s potential and resources. “When I first applied for the job, I saw the potential of the club,” he said. “We’ve got a brilliant footprint at the training ground, unbelievable resources, a fanatical fan base, and room for huge growth. It’s not about personal success or recognition—it’s about being part of an environment with tremendous potential for the future.”
Since taking charge of Sunderland’s under-21 side in 2022, Murty has achieved notable success, including leading the team to the Premier League 2 play-off final against Tottenham last season. Drawing on his experience as a player with Southampton and Reading and as a manager with Rangers in Scotland, Murty has cultivated a strong commitment to player development.
“You can’t be half in,” Murty emphasized when discussing his dedication to Sunderland. “Players will sense it if you’re not fully present or thinking about the next thing. The people I work with daily are top quality, and we’re all dedicated to giving our players the best education, opportunities, and support possible.” He pointed to the team’s high standards in training and performances as evidence of their collective care and ambition.
Murty’s comments followed Sunderland under-21s’ narrow 3-2 defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League 2 at Eppleton. Despite the loss, his focus remains steadfast on building a brighter future for Sunderland’s young talents.
