Sunderland must not give in to Trai Hume transfer pressure: View

The Black Cats had a turbulent 2023/24 season, ultimately finishing in a disappointing 16th place. At one point, they seemed poised to secure a playoff spot, but a difficult end to the season saw them drop down the standings. Managerial instability contributed significantly to their inconsistency, with three different managers overseeing the team during the season. Tony Mowbray started the season but was replaced by Michael Beale in December, despite the team being in ninth place. Beale’s tenure was short and lackluster, managing only 12 games and winning just a third of them. Mike Dodds then took over on a temporary basis. Sunderland’s squad is rich in young talent, but their inexperience likely hindered their success this season. However, if they can retain their key players and appoint a stable manager, they could be serious playoff contenders next season.

Retaining their talent is a significant “if,” as many of their standout players are attracting interest from clubs in England and Europe. One such player is 22-year-old Trai Hume, who has been outstanding this season. Sunderland should prioritize keeping Hume this summer, resisting any pressure to sell. Hume, a Northern Ireland international, joined Sunderland as an unknown 19-year-old in January 2022. Initially a squad player, he quickly impressed and became a regular starter midway through the 2022/23 season.

This season, Hume has been exceptional, consistently featuring in all 46 Championship games and proving himself as a reliable defender. Typically a right-back, he has also played at center-back and left-back, showcasing his versatility. This adaptability has drawn attention from top clubs, including Aston Villa and Napoli, with Leicester, Leeds, and Bournemouth also interested. Despite the potential pressure to sell, Sunderland should focus on retaining Hume to strengthen their chances next season.
