Jake Waters, an 18-year-old lifelong Sunderland supporter, had to leave the field injured during the Premier League 2 clash against Liverpool on Monday night. This unfortunate incident occurred shortly after Waters made his return from an 18-month injury hiatus, marking his first appearance in any football match during the summer pre-season against Hebburn Town last month. In the game against Liverpool, Waters was brought on as a substitute towards the end of the match, which ended in a 2-3 defeat. As the game neared its conclusion, Waters unfortunately fell to the ground clutching his knee, leaving the pitch visibly distressed.
Graeme Murty, the head coach of Sunderland’s under-21 team, provided an update on Waters’ condition following the game. He acknowledged that the injury had a profound emotional impact on both the coaching staff and the players. However, Murty emphasized that it was too soon to determine the full extent of Waters’ injury. “It would be too early to make a prognosis on it and it would be disrespectful to Jake,” Murty told The Echo after the match. He expressed hope that the injury might not be too serious but assured that Waters would receive the best possible support from the club. Murty also highlighted the emotional atmosphere within the team but stressed the importance of waiting for the medical team to conduct a thorough assessment before drawing any conclusions about Waters’ recovery.
