Steven Schumacher aims to strengthen his squad but will need to offload players to achieve the right balance.
As the transfer window approaches its final hours, Stoke City is evaluating which players might be on the way out. With the deadline set for 11pm on Friday, the club’s goal this summer has been to enhance their squad while managing its size effectively.
Over the past few years, the squad has grown unwieldy, with numerous managers bringing in their own players and others being sidelined. Balancing a roster of around 30 players has been challenging, especially with only 11 spots available in the starting lineup.
Examining Steven Schumacher’s current squad reveals areas that are either well-stocked or in need of adjustment. The goalkeeping and defensive positions are adequately filled, but other areas may require some trimming if new signings are to be added.
Lewis Baker, who scored the winning goal against Coventry, may find himself in a tricky situation. At 29, Baker has a strong record in the Championship but might not fit seamlessly into Schumacher’s high-intensity style. Deciding to let him go would be a tough call.
Josh Laurent, also 29 and in the last year of his contract, has proven effective under Schumacher. Although he has passed on the captain’s armband, he remains the vice-captain and might seek longer-term security elsewhere.
Daniel Johnson, who hasn’t started a league game since February and is also in his final contract year, has seen limited action, including a stint at left-back in the Carabao Cup.
Jordan Thompson, another player in the last year of his contract, is unlikely to leave at this stage due to the team’s current injury concerns, although he faces strong competition for a starting spot.
Andre Vidigal has struggled to secure a regular spot since his strong debut and is currently sidelined with a foot injury. Lynden Gooch, competing for a role on the left wing, might find his place taken by Lewis Koumas. Vidigal’s versatility will still be valuable for cover and competition, particularly at right-back.
Niall Ennis has had limited opportunities since his January move from Blackburn. Stoke’s pursuit of another striker, combined with the return of Ryan Mmaee and soon Sam Gallagher, may further limit his playing time.
