Adam Armstrong has emerged as a key player for Southampton, particularly during their promotion-winning season, where he was the Championship’s second top scorer with 21 goals, including a crucial match-winner in the playoffs against Leeds United.
However, since his £15 million move from Blackburn Rovers in 2021, Armstrong’s performances in the Premier League have been less impressive. Struggling to score this season, he was dropped from the starting lineup after the first three games.
With other forwards like Paul Onuachu and Ben Brereton Diaz also underperforming, manager Russell Martin handed Armstrong a chance to shine against Stoke City in the Carabao Cup fourth round. Despite limited attempts, he scored a penalty to give Southampton a 2-0 lead.
In a surprising move, Armstrong received his first Premier League start in seven matches against Everton, replacing the promising Tyler Dibling. He rose to the occasion, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 victory, marking a successful return to form.
With back-to-back goals in the Carabao Cup and Premier League, Armstrong’s resurgence, alongside Cameron Archer’s scoring ability, could help Southampton secure an important win against struggling Wolves in their next away match. The team will be looking to build momentum and boost their chances of remaining in the Premier League this season.
