Southampton wasted £26m on a Reed signing who ended up earning more than Armstrong.

Southampton fans are desperate for a turnaround in the Premier League after the international break, knowing that relegation will be inevitable if their current form continues.

Sitting at the bottom of the table, Russell Martin’s side has endured a tough start, losing nine of their first 11 league games, with several key players from their Championship promotion struggle to make an impact.

One of the underperformers has been Adam Armstrong, who was a standout in the Championship but has struggled to adapt to the Premier League.

After scoring 24 goals in 49 Championship games last season, including the playoff final winner against Leeds United, Armstrong’s form has sharply declined, managing just one goal in eight Premier League appearances so far.

Sofiane-Boufal-Southampton

With Armstrong earning £60k per week, making him the club’s fifth-highest earner, questions about his future could arise if his performances don’t improve. Unfortunately, Armstrong’s situation mirrors that of a previous high-profile signing, Sofiane Boufal, who also failed to live up to expectations after joining Southampton for £16m in 2016.

Boufal, despite a promising start, only managed five goals and five assists across 85 appearances and spent significant time on the sidelines due to injury. Ultimately, his £65k weekly wage and injury-prone career at Southampton left the club regretting the hefty investment.

For Martin and the Saints, it’s now a race against time to improve form, or relegation may soon become a harsh reality.
