Southampton are furious about Manchester United’s timing in approaching Jason Wilcox and are prepared to demand he completes his entire 12-month notice period.
On Monday evening, reports surfaced indicating that Southampton’s technical director was on the verge of transitioning to Old Trafford and stepping down from his current position. Manchester United believes they’ve triggered a release clause by offering a fee equivalent to a year’s salary, but Southampton disputes the existence of such an agreement. According to The Times, Southampton is so displeased with United’s approach that they’re prepared to play hardball, potentially forcing Wilcox to fulfill his full 12-month notice period, despite the critical timing amidst their promotion push, likely via the Play-Offs.
This development serves as an unwelcome distraction during a crucial phase of the season, with talks between United and Southampton stalling. United’s offer, matching a year’s salary, has been turned down, with Wilcox possibly placed on gardening leave until 2025 should he opt to resign. Southampton, angered by United’s conduct, may demand a considerably larger fee than what’s currently on the table. If a more favorable offer doesn’t materialize, Southampton is willing to adhere to Wilcox’s entire notice period, foregoing compensation while continuing to pay his salary.
Saints manager Russell Martin expressed his frustration with the ongoing rumors, emphasizing that little has changed despite media speculation. United faces the challenge of navigating another prolonged negotiation, mirroring their pursuit of Dan Ashworth, who accepted an offer to become the club’s sporting director but remains bound by a notice period until the end of 2025. Negotiations with Newcastle to expedite Ashworth’s release have stalled over the asking price, posing a similar obstacle to Wilcox’s potential move.
Wilcox’s transition to Old Trafford would reunite him with incoming United CEO Omar Berrada, with whom he previously collaborated at Manchester City. However, Berrada is also serving a notice period, further complicating the situation.
