Southampton Shows Interest in Bournemouth Defender

A year ago, Southampton wanted to sign Max Aarons from Norwich City, but following their relegation, they couldn’t attract him, and he ended up joining Bournemouth instead.

With the possibility that Kyle Walker-Peters might leave the club in the summer of 2023 following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, the club explored various options and showed significant interest in Max Aarons.

Aarons’ contract at Carrow Road was set to expire in the summer of 2023. Despite his valuation being between £15-18 million, he joined Bournemouth for just £7 million plus add-ons that could amount to another £4-5 million, due to Norwich being entitled to a development fee since Aarons was under 24.

Aarons started his tenure at the Vitality Stadium well, being in the starting lineup 11 times out of the first 13 games until a hamstring injury disrupted his season in November. Although he made a brief comeback, he was essentially out until March and struggled to regain his place in the side for the last 10 games of the season.

This situation has led to speculation that Aarons might be surplus to requirements, and according to The Daily Echo, Southampton is reviving their interest in the player they pursued a year ago.

Aarons is primarily a right-back, which has fueled speculation that Kyle Walker-Peters could be leaving the club, with rumors suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur might be interested in him. However, Aarons’ potential arrival doesn’t necessarily mean Walker-Peters’ departure, as Aarons can also play left-back. The modern game often favors right-footed players on the left and vice versa, enabling them to cut inside and shoot with their stronger foot.

If Aarons were to sign, Southampton would have good options on both sides of the defense and the flexibility to switch players as needed. Aarons, at 24, has substantial experience, having played 201 league games for Norwich over five seasons, including two in the Premier League. Adding the 20 appearances he made for Bournemouth last season, Southampton would be acquiring a very experienced player if they decided to make their move.
