Southampton put forward offer for £62k-a-week Euros champion

Southampton are exploring a move for Euro 2016 winner Joao Mario as they seek to bolster their squad before the transfer window closes.

The Saints are actively pursuing new signings to enhance Russell Martin’s chances of keeping the team in the Premier League. A new goalkeeper is a top priority, with Alex McCarthy’s age and ability in question. Feyenoord’s Justin Bijlow has emerged as a leading target, with a deal potentially imminent. Ukrainian goalkeeper Vladyslav Krapyvtsov is also on their radar, despite competition from Chelsea and Sunderland.

Additionally, Southampton are interested in Newcastle United’s left-back, Matt Targett, who seems to have fallen out of favor at St James’ Park.

In a new development, Southampton have put forward a proposal to Benfica’s Joao Mario, who is also considering offers from Galatasaray and Flamengo. The Portuguese midfielder has faced recent criticism from fans, which may have contributed to his uncertain status. Despite this, Mario, a Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League winner, could be a significant addition.

Mario’s Premier League experience with West Ham and his £62,000-a-week salary might concern some fans, but his quality and versatility could be invaluable for Southampton. His ability to play both centrally and out wide would provide much-needed flexibility for Martin.
