As the January transfer window approaches, Cardiff City fans may be concerned about the future of midfielder Rubin Colwill.
Having come through the academy ranks, Colwill has become a key player for Cardiff and was once seen as one of the brightest young talents in Welsh football. However, under former manager Erol Bulut, Colwill’s development was slowed due to limited playing time. Since Omer Riza took over as caretaker in September, Colwill has become a regular starter, impressing with his performances, including a standout display in the 5-0 win over Plymouth Argyle, where he scored once and provided two assists. His form earned him a nomination for the Championship Player of the Month award in October, although he lost out to Norwich City’s Borja Sainz.
This season, Colwill has made 18 appearances, scoring 3 goals and providing 3 assists. His good club form earned him a recall to the Wales squad, though manager Craig Bellamy has stated that Colwill still has a lot of development ahead and expected more from him at this stage in his career.
In the summer, Colwill attracted interest from clubs such as Ipswich Town and even Arsenal, but he ultimately stayed at Cardiff. When asked about his chances of staying at the club in January, Cardiff City fan pundit Jack Price expressed optimism, suggesting Colwill could remain with Cardiff until at least the end of the season. He believes that Colwill’s performances have dipped recently, which may work in Cardiff’s favor when it comes to retaining him, but if his form improves, bigger clubs could come calling.
Price predicts that if Colwill were to move, he would likely join a top Championship team or a lower Premier League club like Southampton or Ipswich. However, he believes Colwill would need time to adapt at a higher level and that a January move might not be imminent.
Cardiff’s managerial situation could also play a key role in Colwill’s future. The club has yet to appoint a full-time manager, and the uncertainty surrounding the position could impact their transfer plans. While Colwill has thrived under Riza, the choice of the next manager is crucial to his development, and it may influence his decision to stay or leave.
With Ipswich and Southampton reportedly showing interest, Colwill’s future remains uncertain, especially as his form has dipped slightly in recent weeks, raising questions about whether he’s ready for a Premier League move.
