Southampton in pole position to sign 20-year-old midfielder for Martin

Southampton are “in pole position” to sign an award-winning international player this summer, according to a fresh report.

As Southampton gear up for their first game back in the Premier League after a year away, fans are hopeful that Russell Martin’s new era will continue to improve. To ensure success, new signings are crucial, and the south coast club remains linked with various players.

Southampton are reportedly in a strong position to sign Ben Brereton Diaz from Villarreal this summer. The Chile international spent last season on loan at Sheffield United. Despite the Blades’ relegation, Diaz could stay in a top European league with Southampton.

Another potential target for the Saints is Crystal Palace youngster Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, viewed as a future prospect by Martin. He could also provide valuable support to striker Adam Armstrong.

Southampton seem focused on attacking players this transfer window, with West Brom’s Brandon Thomas-Asante also linked to St Mary’s before the 2024/25 season begins.

According to journalist Sebastien Denis on X, Southampton are leading the race to sign Metz midfielder Lamine Camara this summer. The French club rejected a bid of more than €15m (£12.6m) from Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah and the latest offer from the Saints.

“Lamine Camara refused a crazy offer from Al Qadsiah who offered more than €15 million to Metz. The Senegal international wants to join the Premier League. Southampton are still in pole position to recruit one of L1’s revelations but the latest offer submitted by the Saints does not suit FC Metz…”

Camara, though not a household name, possesses real pedigree and great potential as a footballer. The 20-year-old was voted the Best Young Player in the African Cup of Nations group stage earlier this year, scoring two goals in three appearances for Senegal. He already has 23 caps for his country, scoring six times, and shows promise for further improvement.

Southampton need enough firepower to avoid a quick return to the Championship next season. Camara’s versatility in attack-minded midfield areas and his ability to play a disciplined role could appeal to Martin, making this signing one to watch.
