Southampton in advanced talks for £18.5m Aston Villa prospect after Bournemouth snub

Discussions between Southampton and Aston Villa are progressing on the transfer of a player previously targeted by Bournemouth.

Cameron Archer may be on the move from Aston Villa this summer, with Southampton actively working to secure his transfer.

Archer, who spent last season on loan at Sheffield United following an £18.5 million permanent move, had his return clause triggered after the Blades’ relegation. Despite struggling at Sheffield United, scoring only four goals in 30 Premier League appearances, Archer has shown his potential with six goals in 11 games for England Under-21s and four goals in 14 matches for Villa.

The Athletic reports that Southampton have initiated discussions with Villa over Archer’s transfer. While no deal has been finalized, negotiations are progressing as Southampton aim to strengthen their attack for the new season.

AFC Bournemouth, initially interested in Archer, shifted focus to other targets. With Dominic Solanke’s £65 million move to Tottenham, Bournemouth’s priority has moved to Porto striker Evanilson. Fabrizio Romano confirms that Bournemouth are close to completing the £40.25 million transfer, with medical tests scheduled to finalize the deal.
