Southampton have already found their replacement for Russell Martin.

Russell Martin faces the toughest challenge of his managerial career today. A loss to Ipswich Town could put his job at St Mary’s in serious jeopardy, as few managers survive losing their first five games of the season.

Russell Martin heads into his fifth Premier League game with his future hanging in the balance. Despite last season’s success in bringing Southampton back to the top flight, that achievement now means little. His main task is to keep the Saints in the Premier League, but his poor start, with questions about team selection, tactics, and perceived favoritism, has put him under serious pressure.

According to reports, Southampton’s board already has a shortlist of potential replacements, which isn’t surprising, as most clubs prepare for managerial changes. However, the name at the top of the list is unlikely to excite Saints fans—John Eustace of Blackburn Rovers is reportedly the frontrunner, according to footballinsider247.

The board’s concerns aren’t solely about results. They’re also troubled by Martin’s tactics, particularly his insistence on playing out from the back in every situation. This approach has led to numerous costly errors, with almost every goal conceded this season stemming from players losing the ball or misplacing passes in tight situations.

Eustace may not be a big-name option, but the Southampton hierarchy is said to be impressed by his credentials. He began his playing career at Coventry City and had brief Premier League experience, followed by a solid career in the First Division and Championship with Stoke, Watford, and Derby.

As a manager, Eustace’s journey started at Kidderminster Harriers in 2016. He also served as an assistant and caretaker manager at QPR, helping them stay in the Championship. He later became assistant coach for the Republic of Ireland before taking over at Birmingham City in 2022. In his first season, he guided Birmingham to their highest points total in seven years.

However, despite a strong start in 2023, Birmingham sacked him in October while they sat in 6th place, replacing him with Wayne Rooney. That decision backfired, as Birmingham was eventually relegated. Eustace then joined Blackburn in February 2024, where his solid performance—just six losses in 24 games—has caught Southampton’s attention.

Some fans may not be impressed with Eustace as a potential replacement, preferring names like David Moyes or Graham Potter, both experienced Premier League managers. Given Eustace’s relatively limited managerial experience and his last stint in the Premier League as a player being over 20 years ago, there’s concern over whether he has the experience needed to steer Southampton through a tough relegation battle.
