Russell Martin could significantly boost Southampton’s left-back position by signing one of his ‘exciting’ transfer targets.

The Challenge of Premier League Survival

Staying in the Premier League has never been tougher. Last season, all three promoted teams were relegated. However, Southampton is taking promising steps to avoid the same fate.

Strengthening the Squad

Russell Martin has reinforced the squad by signing three talented central defenders: Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Ronnie Edwards, and Nathan Wood. Additionally, experienced left-back Charlie Taylor and midfielder Adam Lallana have joined the ranks. These additions significantly bolster Southampton’s defense on paper, and Martin isn’t stopping there. He is eyeing another left-back to compete with Taylor, Ryan Manning, and Juan Larios.

Southampton’s Pursuit of Welington

According to the Daily Echo, Southampton is working on a deal to sign Sao Paulo left-back Welington. Brazilian outlet Geglobo reports that a four-year contract proposal has been accepted, with Welington’s current deal set to expire at the end of 2024. The 23-year-old could move as a free agent in January or for a small fee now. Welington, who has made 146 appearances for Sao Paulo since debuting in 2020, could bring a blend of youthful exuberance and experience to the squad.

Why Welington Could Be an Upgrade

Heading into the 2024/25 campaign, Southampton’s left-back position is up for grabs. Ryan Manning had an inconsistent presence last term, with Martin often using Kyle Walker-Peters or Jack Stephens as makeshift left-backs. The signing of Charlie Taylor suggests Martin may not fully trust Manning for a regular role in the top flight. Welington, with his solid defensive skills, could be a significant upgrade.

Comparing the Stats

While Manning is a greater creative force, Welington excels in defense, outperforming Manning in tackles, blocks, interceptions, and aerials won. In the modern game, defending is often overlooked, but Welington, dubbed “exciting” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could be a solid and dependable addition to Southampton’s squad. These are traits that Manning lacked last season.
