Southampton eye £10m star with unique talent

After securing a swift return to the Premier League, Southampton now face the challenge of building a squad capable of avoiding relegation next season.

Saints Preparing for Premier League Return

Southampton’s recent retained list has seen several out-of-favour players released, while the club attempts to secure new deals for key assets on the South Coast.

Targeting Former Saints and New Talent

In terms of new signings, Southampton have looked to bring back former players to elevate their squad to Premier League standards. Adam Lallana has returned almost a decade after leaving for Liverpool. West Ham’s Danny Ings, who scored 46 goals in 100 games for Southampton, is also linked with a return. While some of the recruitment team focuses on proven Premier League talent, others are targeting promising players for the future.

Saints Make Contact for Peterborough Star

As reported by Sky Sports, Southampton are among several clubs that have contacted Peterborough United regarding defender Ronnie Edwards. The young Englishman’s availability has attracted interest from numerous Premier League sides and two Championship teams. Peterborough are willing to sell Edwards for around £10 million.

Edwards played 55 times for Peterborough last season, helping them reach the League One playoffs, though they ultimately fell short against Oxford United.

The 21-year-old central defender, standing at 5ft 11in, compensates for his lack of height with exceptional ball-handling skills.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson praised Edwards’ uniqueness, stating in August 2023, “You can’t replace Ronnie because there is no one else like him… If Ronnie goes it will be for a lot of money.”

With funds from their promotion, Southampton could make a shrewd investment in Edwards, a young talent with the potential to reach the top.
