Under-pressure Southampton manager Russell Martin reportedly still has the club’s support—and perhaps more time to turn things around. The pressure on Martin intensified after a 2-0 loss to Wolves, a key relegation rival, which left Saints at the bottom of the Premier League with nine losses in 11 matches.
Following the match, Martin acknowledged the uncertainty around his future, stating, “It’ll be what it’ll be. We work as hard as we can… The rest is really out of my control. Hopefully, I’ll be able to talk to you in two weeks. If I’m not, we’ll see.”
According to BBC Sport, Martin retains backing from the club’s leadership, with Sport Republic CEO Rasmus Ankersen reportedly exercising patience. Drawing from his experience at Brentford, Ankersen is said to favor a strategic, long-term approach to building a stable, successful team.
Club leadership remains visible at Staplewood training ground, showing ongoing support for Martin as they understand the season’s challenges. The club had aimed for a 17th-place finish, and decision-makers believe Saints could still turn things around.
Although fans’ patience is wearing thin, insiders suggest Saints could add up to three players in January to strengthen the squad. Furthermore, given the financial constraints and high cost—estimated around £12 million—of replacing Martin and his staff, the club is cautious about making another managerial change.
However, as results remain paramount, the club may need to act if Saints’ form doesn’t improve soon—a sentiment shared by many supporters who feel that change is already overdue.
