Sheffield Wednesday will be without their in-form defender Akin Famewo for an extended period following an injury he sustained against Portsmouth on Friday. Famewo, a former Norwich City player, had been a consistent starter in Wednesday’s last eight Championship games, impressing fans and critics alike with his solid performances on the left side of their back three.
Although a minor injury had forced him to miss the season’s first three matches, he quickly rejoined the lineup, even moving ahead of Di’Shon Bernard. Unfortunately, a setback in the 29th minute at Fratton Park has now resulted in a serious injury, with recent scans confirming he’ll be sidelined for “months.” Head coach Röhl acknowledged the severity, stating to *The Star* after their Carabao Cup exit, “No, it is not good… we speak about months at the moment. It is a big one.”
This news compounds Wednesday’s defensive issues, as they are also missing Michael Ihiekwe, who is currently out with an Achilles injury, though his absence is expected to be shorter. In Tuesday’s cup match against Brentford, Max Lowe filled in for Famewo on the left side of the defense, supported by Marvin Johnson.
Despite facing an early goal from Premier League side Brentford’s Kevin Schade, Wednesday managed to equalize with a stunning strike from Djeidi Gassama. Although Röhl made nine changes to his squad, the Owls put up a strong fight, ultimately falling 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout.
