Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Röhl expressed no objections to the penalties awarded against his team but was critical of his players’ contributions that led to those calls. Penalties at Hillsborough have become a rarity; the last one awarded to Wednesday was during their play-off semifinal victory over Peterborough United. This ongoing scarcity has turned the absence of spotkicks into a frequent topic of humor among the Owls fanbase.
This situation became even more disheartening when Watford, attempting to snap a six-game away losing streak, was granted two penalties within just a few minutes during Saturday’s match, both of which they converted, leading to a 6-2 victory that left the hosts with little to celebrate. When questioned about the penalty decisions, one involving Di’Shon Bernard and the other Dominic Iorfa, Röhl shared his concerns, focusing more on the mistakes that led to the penalties rather than the refereeing decisions themselves. He stated, “I think you can give both. The first one is maybe a handball, and that handball is unnecessary… You lose the ball, and normally you can control it; that is our strength, you can pass out and go. Then the second one, I think it’s more a mistake that we’re not connected with the last line. We didn’t make the run, and maybe we thought we were quick enough to close the gaps instead of making the step immediately and staying connected.”
Röhl emphasized that these errors were uncharacteristic for his team and needed to be addressed quickly to avoid further struggles in the next match. As they prepare for a challenging fixture against Sheffield United, the manager is keenly aware of the improvements required to regain their footing before the international break.
