For clubs recently promoted to the Championship from League One, success often hinges on the ability to secure points even when enjoying less possession than their opponents. Sheffield Wednesday’s journey this season underscores this approach. Remarkably, three of their five league wins in the 2024-25 campaign have come in matches where they held a lower possession count.
Notably, in victories against West Brom (29.6%) and Norwich City (28.8%), their possession numbers dipped below 30%. This reveals a pragmatic and strategic side to their game. While some critics have questioned the Owls’ style of play under head coach Danny Rohl, the results suggest a different story. As they navigate just their second season back in the Championship, the team isn’t yet equipped to outplay many top-tier opponents in a possession-dominant game. Instead, they have focused on finding effective ways to earn points, as demonstrated in their recent home triumph against Norwich.
Reflecting on their challenges, Rohl highlighted the disparity between his squad and many of their opponents. He noted, “We are competing against teams with significantly larger budgets and higher-caliber signings over the past five years.” Despite these challenges, he emphasized the importance of data-driven decision-making and a sharp focus on efficiency. Referring to the Norwich match, he added, “When my team attacked forward and exploited spaces, it was always dangerous. The discussions about being compact and organized don’t bother me because I prioritize results.”
Rohl firmly believes in adapting to his team’s strengths and selecting the right players to face strong opponents. While some may find Sheffield Wednesday’s style less entertaining, Rohl remains committed to his philosophy, which balances defense with sharp offensive opportunities. His approach reflects a clear understanding of his team’s tools and the broader context of their Championship journey.
