Sam Prendergast Set to Keep No. 10 Jersey: Will He Deliver Against Australia?

Sam Prendergast, Leinster’s talented young outhalf, is poised to retain his starting position for Ireland against Australia in Saturday’s Autumn Nations Series finale at the Aviva Stadium, kicking off at 3:10 pm. Prendergast, who impressed in last weekend’s commanding 52-17 victory over Fiji, appears set to continue his meteoric rise, with Ireland’s team announcement expected on Thursday at 2 pm. Several rested players are likely to return for the match, but signs suggest Prendergast will start, while Jack Crowley, previously the first-choice outhalf, is anticipated to feature among the replacements.

Crowley had been a fixture in Ireland’s team since the retirement of Johnny Sexton, starting all Six Nations games and key matches against South Africa, New Zealand, and Argentina. However, Prendergast’s performances, particularly his full debut against Fiji, have been difficult to overlook. In that game, despite an early yellow card and a few errant kicks, Prendergast showcased poise and flair, earning high praise from head coach Andy Farrell. Farrell lauded his composure and ability to control the game, even under unpredictable pressure from Fiji, describing his contribution as “great” and noting his seamless orchestration of Ireland’s attacking plays.

Prendergast’s deft passing and game management were on full display as he converted five kicks, including a challenging touchline effort following a superb cross-kick assist for Mack Hansen’s try. At just 21, the former Ireland under-20s Grand Slam-winning captain is rapidly establishing himself at the senior level. If selected, Saturday’s clash against the Wallabies will mark his third international cap and second consecutive start, achievements that contrast with the more gradual early career trajectories of predecessors Ronan O’Gara and Johnny Sexton.

The upcoming game may also feature the return of key players such as Hugo Keenan, James Lowe, and Jamison Gibson-Park in the backline, along with Rónan Kelleher and James Ryan in the forwards. Tadhg Beirne is expected to shift back to blindside flanker, strengthening the pack. In midfield, the in-form Bundee Aki and Robbie Henshaw are likely to hold their spots, potentially relegating Garry Ringrose to the bench. Veteran prop Cian Healy is on course to make history by earning his 134th cap, surpassing Brian O’Driscoll as Ireland’s most-capped player.

The team selection also hints at continuity in nurturing young talent. Gus McCarthy, Ireland under-20s captain and try-scorer on his senior debut against Fiji, may retain his place as a replacement. As Ireland balances youth and experience, the inclusion of rising stars like Prendergast underscores the depth and dynamism driving the team’s evolution heading into the Australian test.
