Southampton’s recent 3-1 loss to Brentford marks their third defeat in as many Premier League games. The team has struggled defensively, conceding five goals this season, with former Premier League player Danny Murphy pointing out that their defensive strategy is leading to more mistakes and goals against them.
Last season’s solid defense, which contributed to numerous clean sheets, is now a concern as Southampton enters the international break. This break presents a crucial opportunity for the team to reassess and refine their tactics. Manager Russell Martin emphasized the importance of using this time effectively:
“It’s really difficult to build any momentum, but every team has to deal with it. We’ll work hard during the break, and the players will also get some much-needed rest. It’s a long, hard season.”
Southampton’s recent additions, including Ryan Fraser from Newcastle United and Maxwel Cornet from West Ham on loan, alongside new defenders like Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Aaron Ramsdale, will need time to gel.
