Roy Keane brought up Newcastle United’s trophy drought when talking about Anthony Gordon’s aspirational career goals.
16 months ago, Toon executives paid £40 million to entice the winger away from Everton. Although Gordon’s first few months in the Premier League weren’t great, the 23-year-old eventually turned into a formidable player after settling in.
Gordon’s remarkable 20 goals in all competitions earned him a call-up to England, where he made a play for a place in the Euro 2024 squad. The forward’s outstanding 2023–2024 performances will probably earn him Newcastle’s Player of the Season accolade as well.
Gordon discussed how he uses visualization and meditation techniques to go better at his game in an interview with Gary Neville, the former captain of Manchester United, on The Overlap. Fans used to the combative on-field demeanor of the Toon star were taken aback by the admission.
Ian Wright, a legend of Arsenal, was impressed by Gordon’s commitment to excellence. “Anthony Gordon is taking his game to the next level,” he remarked. I find him appealing because of this. As soon as the offer was made, he realized he had to travel to Newcastle.
It appears that Everton has made the correct choice based on their current trajectory. He’s seen it and he’s on that road (to success).
But the former Sunderland boss, eager, refrained from going overboard and made light of Newcastle’s sparse trophy cupboard. Gordon had told Neville what he wanted from a career that included bringing an end to the Magpies’ excruciating wait for trophies.
“F****** hell, he’s going to a club that hasn’t won anything in 50 years,” he shot back.
