Field Yates of ESPN reported that Phil Haynes, a free agent offensive guard, visited the Dolphins on Monday. Haynes, who is set to turn 29 in October, was selected by Seattle in the fourth round of the 2019 draft. Throughout his NFL career, Haynes has participated in 31 games, starting in 13 of them.
His involvement was minimal in 2019, not playing any games, and in 2020, where he played in just two games without any starts. Prior to the recent season, he had never started more than three games in a single season.
However, in 2023, Haynes got his opportunity, starting and playing in eight games before a toe injury sidelined him for the rest of the year. Seattle entrusted him as the starting right guard for the 2023 season, and he held that role for all eight games until his injury.
With Robert Hunt departing for the Carolina Panthers on a lucrative contract, Miami might be eyeing Haynes as a potential replacement. While Haynes may not match Hunt’s performance, the Dolphins, operating on a tight budget, could see his addition as a cost-effective move.
If Haynes joins the roster, he is likely to compete with Robert Jones and Liam Eichenberg during training camp for the starting right guard position.
Veteran guard Phil Haynes, who visited Dolphins headquarters today, started all 8 games he appeared in for Seattle last season before going on IR in late November with a toe injury. He's a right guard candidate to replace Hunt.
