Regis Le Bris Hints at Nazariy Rusyn’s Exciting Future with Sunderland

Regis Le Bris has openly acknowledged uncertainty regarding what the recent acquisition of Aaron Connolly on a free transfer means for Nazariy Rusyn’s long-term future at Sunderland. Although Connolly’s arrival brings competition, Le Bris maintains that the Ukrainian forward will still have a role to play for the Black Cats in the coming weeks and months. With Ahmed Abdullahi sidelined until December due to injury, Le Bris was keen on having three strikers in the mix, leading to Sunderland’s decision to bring in Connolly. However, Connolly won’t be available for selection until after the October international break, and once fit, his presence may push Rusyn further down the pecking order.

Rusyn, who has only logged 43 minutes on the pitch this season, all as a substitute, was left on the bench during Sunderland’s recent matches against Plymouth and Middlesbrough. When asked about the forward’s future, Le Bris was candid, stating, “We don’t know.” He elaborated on the importance of building healthy competition across all positions, particularly in attack. With Abdullahi injured, Sunderland had just Mayenda and Rusyn vying for spots, prompting the need to recruit another striker as soon as possible. According to Le Bris, the added competition will elevate the team’s performance, as all three strikers must stay in top form to contribute effectively.

While Le Bris seems content with his attacking options, Sunderland’s defensive lineup also presents him with some interesting decisions. After Dan Ballard sustained a minor injury in the Plymouth game, Chris Mepham stepped in against Middlesbrough and delivered an impressive debut performance. Now, Le Bris faces a tough choice regarding who will partner with Luke O’Nien in defense against Watford, with more competition looming when Aji Alese returns from injury later in the year. Le Bris believes this level of competition is crucial for the team’s development and consistency, stating that players must push themselves to secure a place in the starting lineup.

Meanwhile, Alan Browne may return to the squad for Sunderland’s clash with Watford after missing the Middlesbrough game due to a knee issue. Ian Poveda, having recovered from a thigh injury, is also available for selection. However, deadline day signing Salis Abdul Samed is still on the road to recovery and isn’t expected to feature until after the international break. Le Bris emphasized the need for caution in managing Samed’s recovery, as rushing back too soon could lead to another injury. For now, the focus remains on getting him back to full fitness in time for the upcoming fixtures.
