Wilyer Abreu had an impressive performance, going 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, contributing significantly to the Boston Red Sox’s 6-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates to secure a series sweep. Despite falling behind 1-0 early in the game, the Red Sox rallied with runs in multiple innings, including two each in the third and fifth innings, and one each in the sixth and eighth innings.
Abreu extended his streak of reaching base to 10 consecutive games. Reese McGuire also played a key role with two RBI, while Jarren Duran scored two runs for Boston, which boasts a 10-3 record on the road this season. Justin Slaten earned the win as part of Boston’s bullpen effort, with four relievers combining for scoreless, four-hit ball following Josh Winckowski’s solid start. Winckowski pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits with one strikeout.
Slaten contributed two strikeouts across the sixth and seventh innings. Pittsburgh’s offense was led by Ke’Bryan Hayes and Jack Suwinski, who combined for four of the team’s seven hits. The Pirates took an early lead in the first inning, but Boston quickly responded in the third inning with a rally sparked by consecutive singles from Ceddanne Rafaela and Duran. Abreu’s single to center field put Boston ahead 2-1.
Despite a solid effort by Pittsburgh’s starter Martin Perez, who matched his season-high seven strikeouts, Boston managed to work his pitch count and chase him out of the game after four innings.
The Red Sox added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with McGuire’s two-run single and Abreu’s RBI single extending the lead. In the eighth inning, Duran scored on a Pirates’ defensive error, further solidifying Boston’s lead. Pittsburgh had several missed opportunities to cut their deficit, including Suwinski being thrown out at second base by Refsnyder in the sixth inning.
