Before leaving Sunderland yesterday, Michael Beale, the manager that was fired, apparently lost the dressing room.
Beale leaves with a 33.33% win percentage, making him the worst Sunderland manager since Chris Coleman, who departed in 2018. Beale had four victories in his 12 games in total (including the FA Cup loss against Newcastle United).
Until Beale’s appointment, Mike Dodds led Sunderland to victories over West Brom and Leeds United in his three games in charge before suffering a 1-0 defeat to Bristol City. Dodds will serve as interim manager through the end of the season.
The Black Cats are still four points shy of the top six in the Championship table, in 10th place.
Michael Beale lost the dressing room at Sunderland
Beale, 43, reportedly lost the dressing room prior to leaving the Stadium of Light yesterday, according to a report that surfaced on talkSPORT.
The Sunderland players were especially displeased at having to undergo further training following a loss, while the manager himself took the day off, according to their article, which claims the former QPR and Rangers manager was “understood to have lost the dressing room.”
The loss to Hull City last month and Beale’s final losses to Tony Mowbray’s Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town, two teams vyMike Dodds can take the place of the cynicism.
Sunderland supporters will not have pleasant memories of Beale’s stay.
While the outcomes weren’t entirely subpar, many of the performances were, and Beale’s remarks during press conferences contributed to a strained relationship between the audience and him.
There was a sense of estrangement between the club and the supporters, especially when Beale made remarks about how his accent made him unpopular with Sunderland supporters and his snide remarks about the team being in a “crisis” following the loss to Hull.ing for relegation, were especially lackluster.
Thus, there is still much to be fixed. However, Beale’s dismissal from Sunderland implies that the owners own their error and are the ones who will know for sure if Beale lost the dressing room.
We might never learn the whole truth, but based on his public persona in the first few weeks of his leadership, it wouldn’t be shocking if he had also committed mistakes inside the playing camp.
Nonetheless, Dodds is a very capable coach who exudes composure and humility. He appears to be a fairly safe pick through the remainder of the season, and he now gets the opportunity to prove his abilities to Kyril Louis-Dreyfus and company.
