Reading of League One has released Sam Hutchinson, a former Sheffield Wednesday mainstay.

The 34-year-old is well-known in South Yorkshire, having played for the Owls for three different stints and accrued over 200 appearances. He was an important player for Wednesday as they campaigned for promotion to the Premier League under Carlos Carvalhal. He is a defender who can also play in midfield.

After his most recent tenure at Hillsborough ended two years ago, he was placed on Reading’s books. The Royals have been going through some tough times due to off-field issues.

After being demoted from the Championship the previous season, they had to contend with point deductions in the third division. The team under Ruben Selles’ leadership placed 17th in the 2023–2024 season.

The club has released their retained list, and plans for the upcoming campaign are already taking form. After his contract expires, Hutchinson, Matty Carson, Nesta Guinness-Walker, and Clinton Mola are free to move on.

The Royals issued the following statement in an effort to express their gratitude and best wishes to Matty, Nesta, Sam, and Clinton, who will all be leaving the team this summer once their contracts expire.

Hutchinson, who came via Chelsea’s junior ranks, first came on loan to Wednesday in 2014. After then, his transfer was finalized, and he lived in S6 for six years.

He moved to Cyprus in the summer of 2020 to settle his contract with Pafos. But in January 2021, he went back to South Yorkshire for a second stint wearing Wednesday’s blue and white uniform.
